Introducing Coastal Sailing Japan

The Sibling of Country Roads Japan Goes Way Off-Road!

Go for a virtual sail in Japan's Inland Sea, which is known as "Setonaikai" (瀬戸内海) in Japanese.  Although directly connected to the Pacific Ocean, the western coastal region of the Inland Sea often seems more like a lake.  In the winter strong gusts come from the north-northwest, and during the warmer months the prevailing wind brings humid air from the southeast.  Ocean swell tends to be minimal, but the tides can be significant.  On a clear day you can see the mountains of Yamaguchi Prefecture on the island of Honshu, Ehime Prefecture on the island of Shikoku, and Oita Prefecture on the island of Kyushu.  It is one of the best places to go sailing in Japan.

JPKA Wing Foil Racing Japan Tour #1

The first “tour” of 2022 for JPKA Wing Foil Racing was successfully held at Sumiyoshihama Beach in Oita Prefecture in Kyushu, Japan.  Weather conditions varied quite a bit during the three day event, which included gale force winds with gusts in excess of 10 meters per second (~ 36 kph, ~ 20 knots) on Day 1.

Strong Gusts Cause a Near Knockdown

Extremely strong offshore gusts from the northwest nearly caused a knockdown at one point, but Sleigh Ride held its own and recovered quickly.

Code Zero Gennaker for Light Wind

While it was a beautiful, sunny day off the coast of Kyushu, we could have used just a bit more wind. The conditions were, however, pretty good for a Code Zero gennaker to make the most of the little wind that we could find.

A Bit Nippy off the Coast of Kyushu

Bundle up for a chilly sail on a cloudy winter day off the coast of Kyushu.

Winter Solo Sailing in Japan’s Inland Sea

Jump aboard for a sail on a gorgeous but somewhat chilly day in the western part of Japan’s Seto Inland Sea, which is called Setonaikai (瀬戸内海) in Japanese.
